Museum Strathroy-Caradoc celebrates Portuguese-Canadian heritage through the launch of a new travelling exhibition tracing the history of the “The Portuguese in Toronto”.
The exhibit looks at the history of Portuguese immigration in the Toronto area and its influence on the city. Many local Portuguese-Canadian residents trace their immigration story back to the urban centre of Toronto, which served as a gateway to the rest of Canada.
The exhibit was developed by the Portuguese Canadian History Project (based out of York University’s Clara Thomas Archives), the Portuguese Consulate, and the Gallery of the Portuguese Pioneers.
To celebrate the launch of the exhibit, a reception will be held at the museum on Thursday, July 9 starting at 6 pm with traditional Portuguese music and food available in the exhibit gallery, and representatives on hand from the Portuguese Canadian History Project, the Clara Thomas Archives, the Gallery of the Portuguese Pioneers, and the Portuguese Canadian Club of Strathroy.
At 7 pm, Giller-nominated author Anthony De Sa will be present for a talk discussing his work and experiences growing up in Toronto’s Portuguese community. All are welcome to attend this museum event. There is no cost for admission.
